Translation studies are largely characterized by the studies of translation criteria. In otherwords, they are concentrated on what right translation is to be and how it is pursued. Most ofthe translation studies in a sense of Rhetoric concern the issues in its narrow sense, not oftenstepping into the studies of translation criteria in its broad sense. At present, studies on figuresof speech account for quite a part in the numerous studies of translation. Even the studies on aspecific figure of speech have been prevailing. On the contrary, translation studies in thebroad sense of Rhetoric are started on not very long ago, with few researchers and a fewbarely satisfied performances, in a sharp contrast with the flourishing translation studies. Inaddition, Rhetoric studies are blooming for now, and Rhetoric in its broad sense has alreadybeen the main focus and been fruitful; translation studies in the broad sense of Rhetoricsuggest the reverse.Rhetoric in its broad sense is naturally and intrinsically one of the best approaches totranslation studies. It originates form Rhetoric in the narrow sense, with a number ofresources of some other research areas; it has broadened the scope and horizon of Rhetoric bya probing into Rhetoric. On the premise of the strong hypothesis of the same or similaressential cognition style, translation is therefore transformed into the reproduction of thebroad Rhetoric results; and consequently translation criteria might be equated to theassessments of the reproduction. In the broad sense set by the present research, translationcriteria are discussed with the addresser, the addressee and their interaction on utterancesdiscourses and cognition. The starting and the terminal of the discussion remains the same, soas to build compound and united criteria.Translation criteria are built with the discussion in three concentric circles that show therelationships of the three levels. On the subject of the translation of utterances, it refers to notonly the Rhetoric reproduction of a single figure of speech or an integrated one in the broadsense, but also that of a sentence with no conventional figure of speech attached to. Another isthe translation of discourses, which is constituted by connected utterances. The assessments ofRhetoric reproduction are primarily based on the level of discourses. Utterances aresometimes involved, but in the discourse context. Finally, the two discussions are put into thecategory of cognition. Dynamic and flexible translation criteria are established with theboosting of Rhetoric Vision, Rhetoric archetypes and Terministic Screen. All above aredemonstrated by a number of samples. Translation criteria in the broad sense of Rhetoric areemployed in principle to assess translation globally. They should not and would not beconsidered as the instructions for specific translating.
