Alternative Interpretation:Research On The Folk Character In Foreign Architects’ Works In Modern China

Today’s Chinese modern architectural history study still persists in researching the academic vision established by Liang Si-cheng, Liu Dun-zhen, paying more attention on Chinese "Classical" buildings that represented by official buildings of northern China. As a result, the academy’s understanding of foreign architects’ works in China is limited in the architects who focus on interpreting Chinese "Classical" buildings architectures, such as Henry Killam Murphy. However, foreign architects’ works which interpret Chinese folk characters in China are often regarded as "do not follow the rules of Chinese architectures".In semi-colonial and semi-feudal of modern Chinese social background, conceived with intense nationalism emotional, fathers of Chinese architecture established classical Chinese academic research systems in hope of talking to the west world. However, today China has larger influence in the world than ever before, this Ballad architectural history and alternative works are also an important historical period as well as the composition of it. As it is a valuable research points in transformation way of Chinese modern architecture, it should be circles more attention.This article based on a few research results, starting from the communication history between China and the west world, taking H. K. Murphy as a division points, enumerated and with emphasis case studies of these foreign architects’ works whose’ time in China are before and after Murphy’s.The writing significance of this paper:first remedying limitations in the study of foreign architects’ works in modern China in modern Chinese architectural history research field; And attempts to study their idea of architectural creation and its meaning and reference to the modernity of Chinese traditional architecture at the architectural theory level.Thesis is divided into six chapters:The first chapter is introduction, describes the origin, background and research objects and existing related research, then confirmed the definition of related concepts and determined the research methods and process.The second chapter based on the modern Chinese and western architectural culture history background, putting forward that foreign architects’activities in China are in stages and diversity. In this view chapter analyzes the significance of foreign architects’ works which interpret Chinese folk characters. The third chapter analyzes the foreign architects’ works which before H. K. Murphy.The forth chapter analyzes the foreign architects’works which after H. K. Murphy, and make analysis research of important people and case.The fifth chapter puts forward the important means of those foreign architects’w orks to todays architecture activities in China. Sum up the contribution and limitations of modern Chinese architects, and analysis the mirror means of those foreign architects’ works for todays architecture activities in China.The sixth chapter summarizes the analysis stated in the above chapters and defects of the thesis.
