Teng Gu is a quite distinctive and rather complex writer in1920s-30s of China.However,there is always little concern or research on his literary works.Today, when people mention Teng Gu,they first think of his art historian identity instead of the writer.In fact,there is a unique style and artistic skill in Teng Gu’s literary creation,so the history of modern Chinese literature should not ignore the existence of Teng Gu.The research objections of this paper is Teng Gu’s literature,from the perspective of Aestheticism and Decadence. The paper consists of introduction,main body of three chapters,and conclusion.The introduction is composed by a brief biography of Teng Gu, the current situation of the study of Teng Gu’s literature,and the general idea with basic method of this dissertation.Chapter1fistly refers to Teng Gu’s art theories and literary criticisms,analyzing his main aesthetic principles and literary concepts.Then it summarizes the main style of Teng Gu’s writing by sorting out his whole literature activities of career.It thus demonstrates the leading tendency of Teng Gu’s writing is Aestheticism and Decadence, from both theoretical and practical aspects.Chapter2analyzes and summarizes six basic connotations of Aestheticism and Decadence in Teng Gu’s literary works by reading in depth.The six basic connotations are morbid beauty,fantastic and mysterious colours,psychoanalysis implications, melancholy and pessimistic sentiment, hedonistic and self-reflection thoughts, and rebellious spirits. Then it searches for reasons for the six basic connotations carefully, from multiple perspectives such as the influence of foreign Aestheticism and Decadence, the times and social environment,life experiences and personality,and classical Chinese cultural traditions.Chapter3draws a comparasion among Teng Gu,Yu Dafu,Shao Xunmei and Zhang Kebiao,thus to grasp the unique personality and value of Aestheticism and Decadence in Teng Gu’s literary woks. And then it discusses the subtle change of Aestheticism and Decadence at the final stage of Teng Gu’s literary creation. It also analyzes the defect in Teng Gu’s writing that is lack of aesthetic transcendence.The conclusion summarizes all the previous chapters, making an overall thinking and evaluation on Aestheticism and Decadence of Teng Gu’s literary creation.
