The Classical Tendency of Chinese Modern Literature The paper aims at exploring that the scholars and the writers with classicaltendency think about literature problem, and that they puzzle and choose betweenliterature and politics, between literature and morality, between literature and science,between New literature and classical literature in the course of 30 years of Chinesemodern literature. Apart from the introduction and the appendix, the body of this paper iscomposed of six chapters. The introduction gives a definition of "classical tendency"and tells the object of study and the train of thought in the paper. Chapter oneexpounds that New humanism and early New criticism school have an influence uponChinese modern and contemporary literature, and it analyses by living examples anddata why "classical tendency"appears in Chinese modern literature, above whichpaves the way to still closer explanation for next chapter; Chapter two makes acomb-out of viewpoint of people with classical tendency about classicism , and itbrings to light that they have partiality for classical literature, on the basis, itdescribes that they object to extreme romanticism's and extreme realism's practice ofliterature criticism ; Chapter three describes that people of classical tendency thinkabout viewpoint of literature history and pure literature history on the evolution ofhistory, and they attempt to link up the connection of ancient and modern in the 1940s;Chapter four explains viewpoint of politics from people with classical tendency andtheir cause of formation. In contrast to "the Left literature", it analyses their thinkingabout the relation of literature and politics; Chapter five deals with the puzzlement ofpeople with classical tendency in the relation of literature and morality , and it tells ustheir internal dispute and makes further analysis that they have showed their attitudetoward the criticism of impression form and judgement form; Chapter six describesthe puzzlement of people with classical tendency in the relation of literature andscience, that they reflect upon the literature viewpoint of science. It emphasizes oncommenting and analyzing their attitude toward the doctrine of psychoanalysis. Theappendix involves the problem about "pure literature", and it makes the argument andanalysis in the theory. It describes the puzzlement in the theory during the course offorming of Chinese moden literature mainly from poet, article, music and drawing.
