The Grass is Singing, Doris Lessing’s first long novel, has greatly influenced thesociety after it came out. It was published in1950, and it was one of the mostoutstanding works after WWII. The Grass is Singing describes the life of South Africa,which opens a window for the world to get to know. Today, the studies on The Grassis Singing have mainly been conducted from the perspectives of post-colonialism andfeminism. The approach is relatively single, and not many have touched thepsychoanalytic method. This thesis analyzes Mary’s personality from perspective ofJung’s conscious and unconscious theory. First, conscious theory is used to analyzeMary’s personality, and then personal unconscious is employed while collectiveunconscious is utilized finally. Through these theories, Mary’s personality isexplained as the main cause of her tragedy, and her personality is the result of theconflict of her collective unconscious and personal unconscious, which is good forpeople to explore the factors that cultivate the personality hidden. And it also can helppeople to understand and control themselves better.This thesis consists of the following five parts:Part I is the introduction of the Writer Doris Lessing and her novel The Grass IsSinging.Part II is the literature review.Part III is the critical approach: The Theory of Jung’s Psychoanalysis.Part IV is the discussion: an analysis of Mary’s personality from Jung’s threetheories.Part V is the conclusion, containing main findings, implications, limitations andrecommendation for further study.
