The honeysuckle pattern is an exotic decorative formintroduced into China along with the Buddhist art in Wei, Jin and Northern and SouthernDynasties of China, while its unique configuration is a typical example of perfect combinationof Chinese traditional culture and Western art. The formation of the honeysuckle pattern hasrealized an important change of Chinese traditional decorative theme from animal to plant,and has been developed into an artistic carrier with deep cultural connotations and strongappeal, holding an important position in the Chinese traditional decoration history. During theevolutionary process of extensive dissemination from Western plant motif configuration toS-shaped curly style, the honeysuckle pattern has continuously absorbed customs and culturesof different ethnic groups, and gradually became a visual linguistic form with differentregional artistic features. Therefore, exploring the evolution of shape features andconfiguration style from embryo to maturity becomes the principal objective of this essay,including interpretation and analysis of its plant motif, constituting method and spiritualconnotationsThis essay mainly discusses the shape evolution of the honeysuckle pattern in four parts.The first part analyzes the evolution of plant motif of the honeysuckle pattern, ie.AncientGreece lotus, lotus-palm leave patterns, thus describes absorption and innovation of arts inancient Greece by plant decorations in the two rivers valley against the cultural heritancebackground with appearance of palm leave pattern resulting from shift of flower to leave, thuspaving the way for introduction of Greek plant curly style formation in the next chapter.The second part adopting historical development and cultural heritance as a line, frompattern shape perspective, analyzes forming of Greek plant decoration S-shaped curly patternwhich had a direct influence on the forming of Chinese honeysuckle pattern, shape features ofpalm-acanthus leave pattern in Greek-Roman period as well as Arabian and Indian religiousdecoration art with Western plant shape style.
