The honeysuckle motif is widely popular in Northern Dynasty and is a main external decoration type. The types of leaf shape have one blade (danye), the two blades (shuangye) multi blades, and so on. This kind of motif is mainly applied in grottos, temples, grave, utensils, and other places. This motif looks simple, but the ancient craftsmen used changed them into various shapes such as: wave shape, peach shape, ring-like shape, carapace shape and so on.This research, based on the previous studies, points out the existing shortcomings and studies the honeysuckle motif by a collection of pertaining pictures, and then discusses systematically and thoroughly.This research consists of three parts:The first part is about the decorative significant of honeysuckle motif. The second part mainly discusses the decorative characteristics and types and expounds the characteristics of different types according to the collected pictures and different shapes and organization form of honeysuckle motif. In the third part, this research analyses the origination and combination usage with other patterns based on the existing researches on the honeysuckle motif. Through the analysis, this study aims to help to understand the honeysuckle motif completely.
