A Report On Translation Of The Small Industries Development Bank Of India Act From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

This is a translation report of the legal text of The Small Industries Development Bankof India Act1989. With deepening communications with other countries, especially afterChina’s entry into WTO, China has increased its effort to translate English legaldocuments into Chinese. However, against the backdrop of deepening economic and traderelations between China and India, Chinese versions of Indian legal documents can rarelybe found. The translation of this act can provide Chinese enterprises with betterunderstanding of Indian laws and thus facilitate their investment in India. In addition, asthe establishment of The Small Industries Development Bank of India aims to providefinancing to small enterprises in India, the Chinese translation may provide some clues foraddressing the financing problems that Chinese small enterprises face. Therefore, thistranslation project is of practical significance.German translation theorist Katharina Reiss proposes the text typology theory, whichcategories texts by their functions into three text types—informative text type, expressivetext type and operative text type. The translation strategy of each text type differs fromeach other. As a legal document, the text in the translation project belongs in theinformative text type, therefore information accuracy and formality should be stressedduring the translation process to accurately convey the legal message in the original textand the major translation strategy is literal translation.Translators of legal texts need to get familiar with their linguistic features, includinglexical and syntactical features, follow basic principles for legal translation such as theprinciple of using legal language, accuracy, term consistency and smoothness, and flexiblyemploy translation techniques such as diction, omission and addition, division andcombination, inversion and conversion.In this translation project, the translator, under the guidance of the text typologytheory, explores legal translation and gains some understanding, which to some degreepaves the way for professional development in the field of translation in the future.
