The Book Legal Translation Explained was co-written by Enrique Alcaraz Varó and Brain Hughes and was published by St.Jerome Publishing in 2002.It systematically illustrates and discusses legal translation in various aspects,such as the features of legal English,an overview of English legal system,civil and criminal proceedings.It serves as a great masterpiece for beginners in legal translation since all the contents of the book are able to meet the knowledge needs of them.This translation report is mainly about the translation of chapter four and chapter five of Legal Translation Explained in which respectively introduces English laws and legal systems as well as the translation of different English legal texts.The emphasis of chapter four mainly lies in civil proceedings while the contents of chapter five mainly covers the translation of judgments,university degrees and diplomas,statutes,law reports etc.These two chapters aim to deepen reader's understanding on English legal system and genres of English legal genres or texts.This report consists of four parts.The first part gives an overview to the whole translation task,the second part introduces the whole translation process,the third part analyzes some cases to illustrate the translation process and the last past concludes the whole translation practice from the perspective of major findings,implications,limitations and suggestions to other legal translators.Through the translation,the author finds that legal translators should comply with the principles of accuracy and consistency and employ professional language while engaging in legal translation.Last,an in-depth analysis on lexical and syntactical level of the given legal text will help translators in comprehending more thoroughly.
