This thesis adopts Genette’s narrative theory, especially narrative time, focalizationsand discourses as the research perspective to analyze the characters in Dickens’ Oliver Twist.Based on a close reading of the text, the thesis gives examples and does qualitativeanalysis to demonstrate Dickens’ discontent and satire of the evil human nature, and hispraise and expectation for good human nature, to illuminate that he wishes to change thedark social reality and the unreasonable social system by eliminating the evil human nature,and arousing good human nature. Meanwhile, the thesis illuminates the narrative strategiesused in Oliver Twist by Dickens and the narrative artistic effects through the narrativeanalysis of Oliver Twist.The thesis expects to interpret Dickens’ creative thoughts and value and to provide amore effective and objective research case for the sake of broadening and deepeningDickens study, and enriching the landscape of “the Dickens Industry”. It also expects tohighlight the moral function of literature, to realize its practical significance in terms of themoral system and culture construction.
