The Study Of The Reduplicative Frequency Adverbs In Modern Chinese

This dissertation studies the reduplicative frequency adverbs in modern Chinese from the synchronic plane of syntax, semantics, pragmatics three level,basing on a large number of corpus.Connecting with the diachronic investigation, analyses the generation and development of the reduplicative frequency adverbs in Chinese. Then the dissertation discusses the reasons of the development in the reduplicative frequency adverbs in Chinese,by using the theory of cognitive linguistics and typology, in order to understand the characteristics of the reduplicative frequency adverbs in modern Chinese.This dissertation first discusses the quality and range of the frequency adverbs in modern Chinese, clarifies the difference between the reduplicative adverbs and the reduplicative form of adverbs, then clears the research object of this article, the reduplicative frequency adverbs in modern Chinese, including“常常”,”每每”,”连连”,”屡屡”,”频频”,”时时”,”往往’’these seven words. Then analyzes the characteristics of the reduplicative frequency adverbs at the level of syntax, semantic and pragmatics.At the level of syntax,the main function of the reduplicative frequency adverbs is to act as the adverbial in the sentence and modify the predicate. They can modify the verbs used alone,the verb-object phrase,the verb-complement phrase with directional complement when collocating with verbs. They have the co-occurrence with "了". They also show a lot of common characters when they cooccur with other adverbs adverbial”往往”has clear differences from other reduplicative frequency adverbs.At the level of semantic,the reduplicative frequency adverbs in modern Chinese have many commonalities and differences.The reduplicative frequency adverbs can indicates the repetition of behavior in a specific time period, refers to the large amount of repetition, fuzziness, and discreteness. At the same time,they have many differences in whether they can indicate the repetition of state, whether they have the short-time righteousness, the quantity of continuation,the regularity, judgment, and the tense category.At the level of pragmatics,the reduplicative frequency adverbs have many commonalities and differences in different classes, sentences, the choice of suitable style,and the function in showing the information focus.Then the dissertation discusses the lexicalization of the reduplicative frequency adverbs and the grammaticalization process from the perspective of diachronic, and combines the research of the reduplicative frequency adverbs in modern Chinese presented to explain the difference in the synchronic plane.In the end,the dissertation discusses the evolution motivation of the reduplicative frequency adverbs in Chinese. The diachronic evolution is influenced by cognitive rules, pragmatic demand and the characteristics of Chinese.
