In this dissertation, the low-frequency adverbs in modern Chinese language as the research object. By following the former scholars’ work in this field, we refer to some relevant grammar theories and apply various research methods. Thus in order to make a relatively thorough study of the research questions around the low-frequency adverbs. We hope to provide some evidence and contribute to the study of low-frequency adverbs in modern Chinese language.This dissertation consists of five parts.First is the introduction part which mainly introduced the contemporary situation of the former researchers’ studies. Then we confirmed the meaning of the study and the research questions and the theoretical basis, further stated the research methods as well as the resources of the relevant study materials.The second part made the categories of low-frequency adverbs. What’s more, a structure has been set up to help understanding the semantic features and the grammar characteristics of the low-frequency adverbs.The third part made a thorough comparison and analysis of the common similar low-frequency adverbs such as OU ER (偶尔) and YOU SHI (有时). Then we tried to give some explanations about the differences in grammar, semantics and pragmatics functions.The fourth part made a description of non-typical low-frequency adverbs HEN SHAO (很 少).Then we made a comparison between HEN SHAO (很少) and other low frequency adverbs as well as high-frequency adverbs, thus gained the tiny differences of them from different viewpoints.The fifth part is the summary of the dissertation. We summarized the basic content as well as pointed out the creative part of this dissertation and the existing problems.
