Colonial and imperial double-edge life experiences achievements DorisLessing marginal identity, making her novels also have a distinctive characteristicof marginalization. Her works are rich in theme, varied in style and numerous incharacter,focusing on the real life of contemporary, narrating the ethnic conflictsand the pattern of contemporary gender relations. With calm strokes, she revealsthe fate of the people in the edge of the bottom of society and creates manycharacters of marginal man, demonstrating a strong sense of moral responsibilityas a serious writer has.This thesis consists of introduction, body and conclusion of three parts. Theintroduction describes the definition of "edge" used in novel creation. Byanalyzing Lessing’s survey of novel creation and the situation of study onLessing’s works, it pointed out the necessity of the research about the marginalityin Lessing novels.The body is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the reasonof Lessing’s novel presenting marginality. When she was a kid, Lessing wasunfortunately deported by her family because of her parents’ patriarchal attitudes.She is tired of the regular education system and run away from school because ofher mother’s harsh. Although the British citizen, Lessing has grew up in SouthAfrica. After returned to London when she was29years old, she was unable tofind her attribution since the differences of class and the changes in the externalenvironment. In the creation, she has remained alienated from the mainstreamliterary.The second and third chapter works with specific analysis the marginalcharacters in Lessing’s works. There are both white settlers in colonial dominationbut poor and helpless, and long enslaved but not resist indigenous blacks in "TheGrass Is Singing". The elderly women Sarah, who thirsts for love but was socialridiculed, was described in "Love, again". The old lady HaoDi was described in"The old woman and the Cat", who was abandoned by her children, and she waslonely and helpless. In "The Fifth Child", Ben was bullying abandoned by theirfamilies and society because of his ugly, and in the final he choice suicide.The conclusion discusses the value and significance of Lessing marginalizedcreation contains. In today’s diversified development, marginal existence is inevitable of era.Lessing always maintain its independence in her literary creation, never wantsto belong to any one genre. Her marginalized creation broke the hegemonicdiscourse of the mainstream literary, injects new ideas into the mainstream culture,bringing development of culture vitality.
