A Study On E-C Translation Strategies Of Reportage

The source text is excerpted from the book EXPOSED, which is a work of theAmerican writer Mark Shapiro. This is a reportage exposing the American environmentalpollution and appealing to the society to protect the environment. It aims at helping thecommon people change their views on environmental protection and the principle ofpublic health from the level of the nation and the whole world. Therefore, people canprotect themselves from potential harm while strengthening their sense of responsibility.The subject related directly to the living condition of common people and livingcondition of mankind, which meets the development requirements of the contemporaryreportage.Reportage is of documentary feature, the characteristics of news in its truthfulnessand the features of literature. Considering these features, the translator employed PeterNewmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation as the guiding principlewhen comes to problems in translating. After focusing mainly on the words, sentencestructures and figures of speech, the study arrives at the conclusion: the reportagetranslation should follow the principle of semantic translation mainly, and thecommunicative translation should also be considered when the truthfulness of thetranslated text can be guaranteed.
