At present, Modern Chinese Lacquer-Painting, as an emerging and dynamic paintingstyle, covers all-inclusive factors conducive to the development of modern painting, andapplies “Fault or Mistake” to creative practice, which is the integration of the creative ideasof modern painting based on the rich tradition of lacquer process of succession. The use of“Fault or Mistake” in modern painting has been very common, but the systematic researchhas gained little attention. Ming Dynasty lacquer craft book “Xiushi Lu”, mostcomprehensive record of traditional paint process–“Fault or Mistake”, plays a guiding roleof the practice and theory in applying “Fault or Mistake” to the modern lacquer painting.So we take this craft book as the main basis for the study in this paper. This article is toexplore the rules of “Fault or Mistake” in traditional lacquer art and the usage of it inmodern lacquer painting from the combination of theoretical and practical level based onexcellent traditional lacquer art and combined with the modern aesthetic ideas, with a viewto play an active role in enriching the Modern lacquer painting styles, and expandingChinese lacquer culture connotation and denotation.The article is divided into four parts: the first chapter, Introduction. The background,meaning, purpose and innovation points of this study will be outlined. The next chapter, Anoverview of “Fault or Mistake” and analysis. Including definition of “Fault or Mistake”in the traditional lacquer painting, a brief description of the craft book “XiuShi Lu”, anrelevant overview of modern lacquer painting as well. Then we divide “64Faults orMistakes” recorded in the “XiuShi Lu” into two broad categories, tool material type andpainted decoration skilled, based on the analysis of types and causes in traditional lacquerpainting. Chapter three, Applying “Fault or Mistake” to modern lacquer painting. Firstly,the situation of application about “Fault or Mistake”: Improvement or Import of tools andmaterials, conversion or extension of decoration and skills. Secondly, use condition is to bepromoted by: exhibition demand of modern lacquer art, demand of artist’s creations, andneed of diverse art structure. Then, we summarize the laws of “Fault or Mistake”, so get theview that it could turn to be a benefit skill as long as the proper use in modern lacquerpainting. Chapter four, The meaning of “Fault or Mistake” applied in modern lacquerpainting. It is illustrated that the usage of “Fault or Mistake” inspire lacquer painter toproduce, and states that “Fault or Mistake” to use is to promote the development of modernlacquer painting. Conclude that it take a passive part in developing modern lacquer painting,that expanding diversification of forms, enhancing the production of new painting styles, and promoting the improvement of inward language.By analyzing the relevant references of traditional Lacquer-Painting process and the“False or Mistake” use of modern Lacquer-Painting, this paper draws the conclusion of thepractical use of “False or Mistake” in modern Lacquer-Painting in order to make “False orMistake” be played a great role in the creation of modern Lacquer-Painting and a goodsupplement to the performance skills of modern Lacquer-Painting. This is good to thecontinuous creation and development of modern Lacquer-Painting art and makes a goodinspiration to inherent the excellent traditional Lacquer Art.
