Omissions In The English Version Of Lang Tuteng From The Perspective Of Fusion Of Horizons Under Hermeneutics

Hermeneutics, which studies on the understanding and interpreting of words, is naturally connected with translation. As an important concept of this theory, fusion of horizons represents the translating process, which is the fusion state and process of horizons of translators and the source text and target readers. As a significant book that depicts and studies on wolves on the Mongolia grassland, Lang Tuteng was translated into English by Howard Goldblatt, a famous Sinologist from America and became quite popular in western world. The most outstanding feature of this English version is the frequent adoption of omission strategy. This thesis takes a descriptive method to do a case study on the omitting in the translation process of Wolf Totem. It first introduces the original novel and its English version. Secondly, it explores the nature of fusion of horizons in hermeneutics and translation studies. Thirdly, the omissions in the translated text are listed and analyzed to figure out their original roles in the source text. Then, it goes on to do case studies on the English version of Lang Tuteng. The author analyzes the relevant types of horizons in the translation process and based on this, tries to explore the decision-making of deletions during the integration of horizons in two stages: the fusion of horizons between the translator and the original text, the fusion of horizons between the translator and target readers; and finally reconstruct the overall process of decision-making to leave out certain contents from the source text.
