In modern world, cultural communications between different countries become more and more frequent. There is hegemonic culture and dominated culture because different cultures stay in different and unequal positions in the communications. As a main mean of cultural communication, translation plays an important role in cultural exchanges. Seen from the perspective of power differential, translation practice between different cultures is affected mainly by the status of the cultures. This thesis tries to analyze the choice of translation strategies between a dominated culture and a hegemonic culture. Chapter One is a general review of power differential and the author talks about the hegemonic culture and the four hypotheses proposed by Richard Jacquemond.Chapter Two makes an analysis of the cultural hegemony of the US, including the historic background and the development of the cultural hegemony of the US. Besides, the author focuses on the media and film industry of the US, which is the backbone of the cultural hegemony of the US. Chapter Three discusses the cultural status of China, and makes a general review of Chinese culture. In this part, attention was paid on the “Going out” cultural strategy of China. Chapter Four analyzes the translation strategy from the perspective of power differential based on the communication between China and the US. In this chapter, the author focuses on the foreignization and domestication translation strategies. The last part makes a conclusion that translation must deal with the dialectical relationship between domestication and foreignization. Therefore, through the discussion made in this thesis on power differential and translation strategies, the author intends to make little contribution to the study of translation and translation strategies.
