With the continuous progress and development of mass media and information industry, book desig n is not only restricted to simple bidimensionality, but has been becoming a comprehensive design subje ct. Designers start to pursue an integral book design from the surface to the centre. In the context of globalization, book designing makes us not only pay attention to local culture and ethnic characteristics, but also accord with the aesthetic characteristics of contemporary society. In Chinese traditional art, blank aesthetic thought and artist expression on the combining of nihility and reality open up a completely new idea for book design. This article starts with the key point of blank aesthetics in the combining of nihility and reality, exploring systematically its integration and application of wash painting design elements, which is the important question concerned by this essay.About this topic, I collect and explore the background, analyzing the design idea and works. Therefore, it reaches to the centre of research, which is to say how to apply wash painting design elements to the book design. This article tries to discuss from the following aspects:first of all, it explores the origin of nihility and reality in Chinese art. Besides, it collects and analyzes a large number of classical wash painting works, from formation and spirit, to systematically research the visual value of wash paintings. Thirdly, it analyzes and collects works of book design, and it summarizes and refines manifestation and thought of ink language of nihility and reality, connecting formation, color, image, and artistic conception of examples. Last, on the basis of this research, this article objectively and prospectively proposes the possibility of enlightenment and development brought by the book design of nihility and reality.
