Research On The Style Of "Shuolin" And "Chushuo" In Hanfeizi

"Shuolin" and "Chushuo" are two story collections that are composed of stories collected widely by Hanfeizi for lobbying. He gave a name "shuo" and classified those tales as "shuo", which reflects his cognition of narrative factors and dose accord with the characteristics of an ancient style named "shuo".However, nowadays a number of researchers ignored the existence of "shuo" style, regarded the stories in "shuolin" and "chushuo" as fables and mingled Chinese traditional view of fables with western view. Thus it made stories in "shuolin", "chushuo" and pre-qin prose much obscure. At this point, the existence of "shuo" style and its characteristics are asserted and the fact that "shuolin" and "chushuo" are "shuo" style is argued. Moreover, through researches on ancient and modern connotation of fables and the situation of the style of fables in China, the difference of the connotation of fables between the East and the West is analyzed, which can repudiate the statement that "shuolin" and "chushuo" are the style of fables.There are three parts including introduction, main body(three chapters) and epilogue.Nowadays researches on "shuolin" and "chushuo" are introduced. Also, purpose of topics, main content and methods of the research are manifested. The first chapter is to make an introduction to guide the headway of the research by two ways. First, the sense of the topic is explained by describing the specialties of Hanfeizi in pre-qin prose and the specialties of "shuo" in Hanfeizi.Second, according to the argument on the style of "shuolin" and "chushuo" in researches, the relationship between the "shuo" style and the word "shuo" is investigated by discussing the connotation of the word "shuo", which can asserts the point and lead to the discussion of the two styles.The second chapter is to make a positive argument. The materials are analyzed to argue the matching relation between the materials and topics. First, the existence of "shuo" style in ancient time and its basic characteristics are analyzed by inquiring ancient literature. Second, the various uses of "shuo" and the influence of these uses on writing style are researched by analyzing the essays named by "shuo".Third, to confirm that "shuo" in "shuolin" and "chushuo" is the expression of ancient style, the form of "shuo" in "shuolin" and "chushuo" is investigated while the association between "shuo" style and the form "shuo" in "shuolin" and "chushuo" is also analyzed.The third chapter is to make a negative argument. A clear definition of the style of "shuo" and "chushuo" is given by arguing the difference between the style of fables and the style of "shuo" and "chushuo". First, the definition of "shulin" and "chushuo" in the twenty centauries researches is introduced. Second, the different cognitions of the style of fables are introduced. Besides, the connotation of fables in the past and the present is inquired. Third, on the basis of the contradiction and the accordance between different concepts of fables, the connotations of western and eastern fables are analyzed. Furthermore, "shuolin" and "chushuo" are compared with Aesop’s Fables,which manifests the varies of the connotation of Chinese fables from the ancient to the modern. And the distinction is emphasized to explain the attribution of "shuolin" and "chushuo" have no association with modern style of fables.The final part is epilogue. The main topic is to assert that "shuolin" and "chushuo" is "shuo" style instead of the style of fables. However, they are entitled by fables for a long time, which interiorize in the modern time. Nevertheless, history are supposed to be treat scientifically, objectively and tolerantly while people should be realistic and do not concern with the past.
