George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is a world famous American music in the twentieth century. The using of jazz element which presents the symbol of American music is the unique feature of this work. Most of the version we listened is the piano with symphony orchestra and it naturally brings us a sensation as classical music. For this reason, we always talk about this piece as a classical music with jazz elements. But for the truth, the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue was written for a jazz band with piano version that was not the version we hear now. After 19 years, the symphony version came out. Here, in this dissertation, I will focus on the historical development of this work to re-examine how this work changed from a jazz band version to a symphony version. Meanwhile, I will re-examine the other two people, Paul Whiteman and Ferde Grofe, as the key figures in this work.
