The Research On Catholics Cases In Guangping Prefecture Between 1856 And 1900

In 1844, Lagrene, Minister of France, officially put forward the order of repealing the prohibition of Catholicism. On February 20 th, 1864, Daoguang Emperor declared to “stop banning” Chinese people to papalize, that is, “since Catholicism educate people to be kind, which is rather different from other heathendom, it has been permitted to stop being banned”. According to the stipulation of article 13 in Sino-French Treaties signed on June, 27 th, 1858, missionaries who own sealed licenses should be protected by local officials, moreover, “Chinese people who are willing to worship Catholicism and to observe all rules and regulations can exempt from pubnishments”. From then on, Catholicism has been rescinded the prohibition, and catholics can preach in Chinese mainland. However, because of differences in terms of political situation, ideology, cultures and do on, disputes between residents and Catholicism took place, which triggered a series of catholics cases.Based on this background, starts from specific time and places and takes anti-Catholicism cases happened in Guangping Prefecture from 1856 to 1900 so as to clearly study the background, incentives of catholic cases here, as well as interactions among different social levels during the process of producing and dealing with cases. As a high-frequence place of catholic cases in Vicariat Apostolique du Tcheli-sud-Est, Guangping Prefecture processes its unique natural conditions and social environment, which not only creates favorable conditions for introduction and development of Catholicism, but also promotes the formation of anti-Catholicism group. But when two different powers interveaving and crashing, it will trigger more catholic cases in Guangping Prefecture. As for its long time-span and broad territory, between 1856 and 1900, there have been a total of 9 kinds of different forms about the catholic cases in Guangping Prefecture and five kinds of incentives, as well as all social strata’s multiple interaction during the process of producing and dealing with cases.Compared with Daming Prefecture in Vicariat Apostolique du Tcheli-sud-Est, between 1856 and 1900, the number of catholics in Guangping Prefecture gained a rapid increase, and its relief facility in Catholic Church was also more improved, which has a sharp comparison with the high-frequency of catholics cases, and therefore, there is special importance for us to study the catholics cases in this region.
