Culture is the nation’s deep memory and spiritual implication, which features of natural selection are different from animals, and is the subjective method of mankind to create the world as well as the reality of nation’s existence. Cultural Identity is cultural subject’s recognition, acceptance and approval to its culture. Also, it’s the consciousness of attribution and the process of acquiring cultural self-consciousness of a nation. Under the background of globalization and social transformation, cultural communication and collision as well as the conflict of ideology and values among nations are increasingly intense, which leads unprecedented challenges to Cultural Identity. As a significant part of Chinese traditional culture, the existence and development of Northern Shanxi Folk Art also has been challenged.On the guide of Cultural Identity Theory, this article contains 6 parts which focuses on the heritage and development of Northern Shanxi Folk Art. The first chapter is introduction, mainly on the paper’s background, research status, theoretical basis, contents, methodology, and innovations. Then the Cultural Identity Theory is summarized in the next part, which has mainly defined its connotation, characterizaion and fundamental functions. In the third part, the dilemma and its causes have been analyzed according to the status quo of Northern Shanxi Folk Art’s Cultural Identity. Following that is the contemporary value of Northern Shanxi Folk Art in the perspective of Cultural Identity. Finally, the article interprets the way of Northern Shanxi Folk Art’s development in the perspective of Cultural Identity. In the perspective of Cultural Identity, the article plans to raise researchers’concern over Northern Shanxi Folk Art and makes them realize the responsibility of cultural subjects by exploring its contemporary value. Consequently, behaviors of cultural subjects could be better regulated and constrained, as well as the inheritance and development of Northern Shanxi Folk Art could be promoted.
