The Experimental Research On Jokes Bring About Catharsis To Aggression Of College Students In Different Types Of Personality

Many researchers have tried using experimental study to verify Freud’s jokes and catharsis theory, trying to figure out whether the hostile joke would bring about a catharsis to aggression. Earlier studies use funny degree as the quantity of subjective catharasis,they have indirect confirmed hostile jokes brought about cathartic effect. Later studies, by measuring the variation on the level of aggression, more directly to study the change of the aggressive level which caused by the hostile joke.In previous studies, they are designed to verify the proposed general conclusion of Freud in his joke theory, namely the hostile joke would bring about catharsis to agression. But one dependent variable is often affected by more than one independent variable, the aggressive catharsis effect is likely to be not only related to the type of joke(that is, the hostile joke can be cathartic effect and innocent jokes are not), may also be affected by other variables. Because there is a close relationship between personality traits and aggression, so it is necessary to discuss the high aggressive personality traits and low aggressive personality traits between subjects, hostile jokes bring about different effects to aggression. So this experiment study introduced "aggressive personality trait " variable, and assuming an hostile or innocent joke on subject’s aggressive catharsis, in accordance with the aggressive personality types of subjects; Assuming the funny degree of an hostile or innocent joke, according to the aggressive personality type of subjects.This study used 2(aggressive personality traits: high/low) x 2(joke types: aggressive/non-aggresive) experimental design between subjects. The dependent variable 1 is the cathartic quantity of aggression, the dependent variable 2 is the funny degree of jokes. Make use of statistical software SPSS to analyze the data and conclude that there is significant interaction between joke type variable and aggressive personality type variable.
