The author wrote this essay as one of the research topics that she studied during the last three years, in which she combined some important elements in painting and two ignored ones — overlay and juxtaposition to find out how they affect a work superficially and mentally. With the appreciation of some great works, the author deeply explored how to show the spirit and the thought of a work with overlay and juxtaposition. There are four parts in the paper. In the first part, I confirm that overlay and juxtaposition are important part of oil painting language. By showing some sample works and words, I want to prove that they are as important as other painting languages. Secondly, I try to tell how you can see overlay and juxtaposition in some classic works by analyzing van gogh’s, Seurat’s and Klimt’s works. In the third part, taking van gogh’s, klimt’s and kiefer’s works as examples, I try to find out the spiritual function of overlay and juxtaposition. at last, I deeply study how to inherit the traditional visual culture and show that overlay and juxtaposition play very important roles in oil painting study.Deeply influenced by the landscape paintings of Gustav Klimt, the author studied his painting style, model and color. In the end, she came back to the research of vision culture tradition. Finally, she got her own most suitable painting method and put it into use in her oil painting works.
