| Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) originated in non-English speaking countries in the European Union in the 1980’s. It integrates language teaching and discipline content teaching, promoting language learning and other discipline content at the same time. Under this background, most studies of CLIL focus on language knowledge and language skills and are carried out in foreign language teaching in primary schools and secondary schools. In China, most studies on CLIL are conducted theoretically and are carried out among undergraduates in general English teaching and learning. In recent years, CLIL has been employed in English for Academic Purpose (EAP) teaching and learning among doctoral candidates of science to build up an EAP teaching and learning mode. The research collects data by questionnaires and classroom observation.140 doctoral candidates of science in Dalian University of Technology (DUT) participated in the questionnaire survey. There are two kinds of questionnaires. Questionnaire I investigates the general situation, learning problems and strategies in doctoral students’EAP learning. Questionnaire II examines the effects of CLIL on the participants. The observations were provided according to classroom ethnography. In addition, a comparison of the attitudes towards EAP and the strategies in EAP is made between pre-class and post-class to investigate the possible effects. The study obtains the following findings.1. There is a strong possibility of implementing CLIL in EAP teaching.2. CLIL can stimulate the doctoral students to command EAP writing strategies efficiently.86.92% candidates think CLIL mode greatly helps them write academic papers in English. Most students think the most effective course activity is analyzing structure and content of academic papers.3. There are the main effects of CLIL on the doctoral candidates’EAP development worth sustaining as long-term value.90% of the participants think they have benefited a lot from academic paper structure and moves. Overall, CLIL has some positive effects on doctoral candidates in EAP learning. |
