War films have played a very important role in Chinese genre films since it was born. They were deeply influenced by society at their times. Not only the cultural context and aesthetic features of films, but also the molding of the image of characters are all able to reveal changes and progress of war films. As a result, war films have different characteristics as time goes on.At the mention of war films, the first that springs to our mind were intense battles and male soldiers fighting enemies without fear. Conventional wisdom also holds that battles are things that should be left to men after all and only men could participate in the fighting. Therefore, male soldiers are always the main characters of war films and they represent man’s masculine. However, females are necessary and can never be replaced in war films. Been added to the war films, women’s femininity can create unique features for fierce war films.Creating the image of heroes is the essential task of image shaping of war films, and man’s masculine is always the object of expression in most war films. Nevertheless, most female characters are insignificant when compared with male characters. The importance of females in battle and their real inner world are somehow not being interpreted appropriately in the war films. What’s more, most female characters in war films are not being showed completely. They were created only for the necessary expression of state ideology and patriarchal ideology. So, they are not the real reflection of female’s gender awareness.War film is the main type of Chinese films, and its development impacts the overall quality of Chinese films. Continuing improvement of movie technology which helps presenting audiences better visual effects is not the only one that necessary for the development of movies. What is also important is the constantly improvement of the inner forms of films, especially the shaping of female characters. How to create more meaningful female characters which can present female’s real consensuses in films is also the problem needed to be considered. The study of female characters will actively promote the overall development of the war films.
