Considered as the 21st century’s first important works of Chinese literature, Mo Yan’s "Sandalwood Penalty" caught people’s eyes as soon as it came out. Scholars researched it from folk literature, native literature, historical perspectives. After reading and analysising in-depth, I found that the novel really has something interesting in narrative. "Sandalwood Penalty", considered as the first novel after Mo Yan saying "retraet", learned folk culture in the narrative strategies and showed civil atmosphere and pure Chinese style. As a result, on the basis of the western narrative theory and folk tales, "Sandalwood Penalty" narrative strategy has certain theoretical significance and value.Although there are previous studies, but most of them were superficial and lack of specific inquiry.It seems to be a pity. Therefore, I selected the "Sandalwood Penalty" narrative strategies as the object of study, hoping to make up for this pity.The introduction of this paper briefly introduces the research background and object topics,research review, research meaning, method and innovation in order that the reader have a certain understanding about the basic research ideas.The first chapter is about narrative structure and narrative time, deeply analysising "Sandalwood Penalty" from clues, structural order, connectivity, contrast. Figuring out the sense of rhythm and harmony that brought by the sequence, connectivity, contrast. Through the study of story time and narrative time and cultural connotation of the novel, we can feel "Sandalwood Penalty" narrative time exhibited profound humanistic and rich cultural implication.The second chapter mainly tells story and characters. It discusses how to write an old story with a new tone by standing on civil position.It analyzes the history from another hand and shows the enlightenment and attitude of the new historical novels. It also analyzes main characters, especially Zhao Xiaojia who seems to be fool but konws truth. In the unique narrative arrangement, Mo Yan wrote the historical story and characters in a new way.The third chapter is narrative perspective and narrative language. It analysis the influence of Chinese opera on the novel, the personality characteristics and action features of novel language. Narrative language is closely related to.By focusing on the narrative perspective, showing the unique, appropriate narrative language and narrative perspectives. In addition, omniscient perspective is always used in writing. The paper analysis Mo Yan’s distinctivly use flow perspective、annular perspective and radiation-shaped perspective.The forth chapter is about narrative imagery of "Sandalwood Penalty". It studies selection of imagery combination of imagery social imagery and folk imagery. Imagery is a kind of cultural code, and Mo Yan inherited the Chinese traditional narratives’wisdom and strategy. By selecting and combining imageries, just as Sandalwood, instruments of torture, throne, prayer beads and so on, he enriched the meaning of imageries with foreign modernism and narrative experience which played an important role in the novel and give the brilliant glow glory.The part of conclusion summarizes the main contents of this paper. It summarizes the achievement of Chinese narrative, and explains the causes and significance of the narrative studies for "Sandalwood Punishment". It also looks to the future of narrative studies for Mo Yan’s novels.Through the deep reading on the "Sandalwood Punishment", I elaborate the narrative structure of the novel, characters, time, stories, images, perspectives, language and other aspects of narrative strategies. I hope that the paper can make some contributions to the narrative studies for Mo Yan’s novels.
