There are three forces which are The Institute of Social Sciences, ShiHuo school and Marxists in Chinese economic history of Republic of China. This three different forces represent three different paradigms that constitute the fundamentals of the study on economic history in Republic of China.China modern economic history produced with the introducing of western social science. It is earlier for The Institute of Social Research (Predecessor of The Institute of Social Sciences) to conduct the studies of economic history which mainly is socio-economic survey that provided a useful reference for subsequent studies on historical data and methods.It is the first work of studying on economic history for The Institute of Social Sciences that is collecting and sorting of historical data. So it has spent a lot of energy into the historical work, especially for the raw data collection. And The Institute of Social Sciences advocated to work in cooperation with a division of labour and took Specialized History as the basic form of economic history research. At the same time, The Institute of Social Sciences is good at using statistical methods on economic history research. To some extent, it has driven China’s economic history research towards specialization and scientification.The Institute of Social Sciences hosts four academic journals which as the front of economic history research, such as Studies in Modern Economic History of China, The History Supplement of Social Welfare Tientsin, The History Supplement of Central Daily News and Quarterly Review of Social Sciences. This four publications undertake the different missions, thus showing different characteristics. Studies in Modern Economic History of China makes its mission as disclosing the historical data and showing a strong professional. The History Supplement of Social Welfare Tientsin try to reconstruct New Historiography centering on the economic factors and hovering between professional and popular. The History Supplement of Central Daily News focuses on the reality and fulfills the social function of academic research. Quarterly Review of Social Sciences is the early test site of Chinese social and economic history, which shaping academic features on economic history study of The Institute of Social Sciences. With those academic fronts, The Institute of Social Sciences become a very important center of economic history research in the Republic of China.The Institute of Social Sciences has made many achievements in economic history study, mainly in historical work which is based on sorting the Ming and Qing archives and thematic history research on finance and banking, salt policy and traffic etc. In addition, The Institute of Social Sciences focuses closely on the development of foreign economic study which broad the horizons of Chinese economic study.The Institute of Social Sciences has the very distinct characteristics, compared with the other schools on the economic history study.For example, it is far away from politics and participates in the work of economic history study with the identity of the expert. Expert route pushed the work of the thematic History Research, but the writing of general history is always the direction of The Institute of Social Sciences, and it shows characteristics from specialized history to general history in the research path. Otherwise, the Institute of Social Sciences whose main research mode is based on economic history study of economics promotes the development of the Republic of China economic history with the other two paradigms.In short, as the academicism of economic history study, The Institute of Social Sciences pushes Chinese economic history becoming mature in a more professional and scientific way.
