This is a project report on the translation of the book entitled Cognitive Linguistics (Croft & Cruse,2004) in which the basic principles and methods of cognitive linguistics are introduced. The fifth chapter Polysemy:Construal of Sense Boundaries of this book has been chosen as the source text. Then a project report is composed on the basis of the translation of this chapter. As academic writing, the source text can be defined as an informative text. The emphasis of the translation of informative text lies in the maintaining of the semantic equivalence of the source text and target text. Thus the major task of the translation work is to correctly convey the same concepts as expressed in the source text. Therefore, Christiane Nord’s translation-oriented text analysis model is adopted as a guiding theory to resolve the problem in the translation work. The translation type of this work belongs to instrumental translation, and the aim is to achieve a semantic equivalence between the source text and target text. Specific translation methods are discussed and examples are present to analyze the specific problems in the translation work.Several implications can be concluded from this translation practice. First of all, an appropriate theory will be very helpful. Second, it would be better if preparations are made in advance and parallel texts are good references. At last, a good command of both the source and target languages will facilitate the quality of the translation work. These together will lead to the success of a qualified translator in the future.
