This thesis is a practice report based on the translation of an astronomical popular science book,Night Sky:A Field Guide to the Constellations. The report mainly discusses about the application of a translation-oriented text analysis model to the translation practice. The model, underpinned by the'functionality plus loyalty'principle, was put forward by Christiane Nord, one of the representatives of the 2nd generation of Functionalism. The translation practice shows that Nord's model can provide translators with a theoretical framework that is applicable to astronomical popular science books. As for the theoretical framework, the author makes a brief introduction to other representatives of Functionalism who has made contributions to Nord's text analysis theory.Besides, the author emphasizes four concepts put forward by Nord:the functional typology of translations(documentary and instrumental translations),the translation brief, textual analysis(extratextual and intratextual analysis),and the hierarchy of translation problems. As for the translation practice, the author presents how Nord's model has been applied to the translation project.First?in the pre-translation process, the author analyzes the translation brief and the source text carefully. Thus, extratextual and intratextual factors where translation problems might arise from would be prominent,as well as instructions for translators to translate. Moreover, the translator may get well-prepared for translation difficulties after such analysis. In the process of producing the target text, the author resorts to Nord's functional typology of translation so as to deal with different translation problems.By flexibly adopting strategies like liberal translation,amplification,zero-translation,and caique under the guidance of documentary and instrumental translations, the author found that documentary translations are good for dealing with text-specific translation problems;instrumental translations are favorable for solutions to convention-related translation problems;a combination of documentary and instrumental translations contributes to solving both pragmatic and linguistic translation problems. To conclude,Nord's model can guide translators to realize text functions after interpreting the translation brief-so as to learn about expectations for the TT,analyzing the ST-so as to predict various potential translation problems, and dealing with translation problems under the guidance of documentary and instrumental translations and after proper use of translation strategies.Nord's translation-oriented text analysis model has been effectively applied into the translation practice.
