Modern Chinese Dictionary(6th edition), an authoritative, introversive and medium-sized Chinese dictionary, plays a vital role in our daily life. Taking the dictionary as the research object, the author combines the corpus to investigate and analyze the vocabulary entries whose definitions or explanatory notes contain the word “mostly”, trying to find the usage and characteristics of them and putting forward relevant suggestions.The thesis consists of three parts divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1, the introduction of the study, briefly describes the reason of the study and research status, confirms the research methods, clarifies the research direction, as well as brings forward emphases and difficulties of the research. The main body of the thesis is Chapter 2 to Chapter 4. Chapter 2 explicates 18 different types of the vocabulary entries whose definitions or explanatory notes contain the word “mostly” in Chapter 2, based on which the author then states the characteristics of the targeted vocabulary entries in Chapter 3, indicating that some of them should be merged. In Chapter 4, the author partly verifies the conclusion of Chapter 3 through the investigation of those vocabulary entries in the corpus, pointing out existing problems in terminological expression and modification suggestions. In Chapter 5, the conclusion of the thesis, the author summarizes merits and demerits in word explanations, terminological expressions and layout of the targeted vocabulary entries through empirical investigation, as well as discusses limitations of the study.
