This report uses Chapter 10 of the book Big Gods: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict, edited by Dr. Ara Norenzayan, a well-known social psychologist as its source text(ST). Consisting of 10 chapters, the whole book explores the rise of prosocial religions and large-scale cooperative communities from social psychological and historical perspectives. The selected chapter illustrates the religious origins of secular societies and gives us striking clues to the particular kinds of institutions and practices that can displace religion and build godless but cooperative societies. The translator adopts the combination of foreignizing and domesticating translating strategies and integrates several other techniques, such as literal translation technique, omission, splitting, and so on, in a bid to render a qualified version. This translation report consists of four parts: project description, process description, translation difficulties and solution, and conclusion. Chapter One mainly gives a brief introduction to the relevant background knowledge of the ST, including author’s profile, main content of the selected chapter and reasons for text-selection. Chapter Two focuses on the translation process and several quality-control methods. Chapter Three deals with translation difficulties and translation strategies and techniques adopted to deal with those difficulties, such as the translation of long sentences and terminology. Chapter Four concludes the inspirations the translator gained and the problems to be addressed in the future.
