The Relationship Between Intimate Relationship Growth,Attachment Style, Personality Traits And Marital Quality

Object This study was aimed to design an intimate relationship growth scale in China and find out the influence of intimate relationship growth on the marital quality, at the same time, find out the relationship among the personality, attachment style, the intimate growth and marital quality.Method Defined the perception of the intimate relationship growth, used the top-down strategy to work out the intimate relationship growth scale. used the intimate relationship growth scale to test on the 1487 couples of mainland and analyze the data statistically.using the big five personality inventory and the experiences in close relationship inventory to find out the relationship among the personality, attachment style, intimate growth and marital quality.Results(1)The result of Factor Analysis showed that the intimate relationship growth scale including four factors: marital attitude, Relationship promotion, positive coping, negative coping, which accounted for 53.66% of the total variance. The whole scale contained 27 items. The whole scale internal reliability coefficient was 0.8393(p<0.001); the internal reliability coefficient of each factor ranged from 0.744 to 0.844(p<0.001); the confirmatory factor analysis showed that the structure of the intimate relationship growth scale was reasonable; the correlation between factors of the marriage perception scale and factors of the intimate relationship growth scale ranged from 0.36 to 0.786.( 2) There is significant correlation between the attachment style and the dimensions of the marital perception(p<0.01,p<0.05), the different group of attachment style combination has significant difference in each dimension marriage perception(p<0.01, p<0.05); the growth is complete intermediary between attachment style and marital quality; the growth and attachment style of wives could significantly predict the marital quality of husbands and themselves and vice versa.(3)There is significant correlation between the dimension of personality and the dimension of marriage perception(p<0.01, p<0.05), the groups of personality combination have significant difference(p<0.01, p<0.05); The husbands’ personality of neuroticism(B=-1.093, p<0.001) and openness(B=0.492, p<0.01) and the growth(B=0.743, p<0.001) could significantly predict their own marital quality, the personality of neuroticism(B=-0.901, p<0.001), conscientiousness(B=0.513, p<0.01) and the intimate growth(B=0.542, p<0.001) could significantly predict the wives’ marital quality; the wives’ personality of neuroticism(B=-0.838, p<0.001), extraversion(B=0.569, p<0.01), agreeableness(B=0.638, p<0.01) and intimate growth(B=0.647, p<0.001) could significantly predict there own marital quality, the wives’ personality of neuroticism(B=-0.833, p<0.001), conscientiousness(B=0.421, p<0.05), agreeableness(B=0.589, p<0.05) and the intimate growth(B=0.603, p<0.01) could significantly predict the husbands’ marital quality; The intimate growth of husbands is partly intermediary between personality and marital quality, the intimate growth of wives is totally intermediary between personality and marital quality.Conclusion(1)The theory structure of intimate relationship growth scale was fitting and reasonable, The results of reliability and validity testing were accord with the measurement standards.(2)The marital quality and intimate growth have significant differences in age, marriage-age, education level and occupation.(3)The intimate growth has significant mediating effect between attachment style and marital quality, actor-partner interdependence effect of the intimate growth and attachment style are significant.(4)The intimate growth has significant mediating effect between personality and marital quality, the actor-partner interdependence effect of the personality and the intimate growth are significant.
