Defamiliarization in literary translation requires that the translator keeps the linguistic and cultural forms of source language by foreignization so that the original text will not be domesticated into familiar or obvious forms. The pursuit of difference is not only the core concept of postcolonial theory, also the important content of translation study in the postcolonial context. The difference in translation, to a large extent, is achieved by language reformation strategy which highlights the difference. Therefore, philosophy and history of difference or define terms and concept of difference(such as “heterozygosis”, “foreignization” “defamiliarization”) will not be retrospect in this study. Instead, based on heterogeneity of literary and literary translation, it will explore characterization of All Men Are Brothers’ s language style and cultural strategy Pearl S. Buck applicated and reveal the significance of difference in postcolonial context.In this thesis, it will be divided into three levels to analyse defamiliarization in Pearl S. Buck’s All Men Are Brothers, including linguistic level, cultural level and literary level. Combined with illustrative examples in these three levels, this thesis will be concluded the reason of Pearl S. Buck’s translation strategy, analyse her strategy, and interpret methodological significance of Chinese-Foreign translation.
