The art of Book Carving appeared in the last century 80’s in China. It is a derivative art of calligraphy. It was inspired by the art of Book Carving in Japan and South Korea and affected by western modern art concepts after the appearing of the art of seal cutting. Even though its time is shorter, but it developed very fast, especially after the Ten Session of the national professional exhibition. Its independent category of art status has been established.The theory research and creation of Book Carving is comparatively slow, take its name as example. We do not know if we should call it “Book Carving” or “the art of carving”.etc. So this paper choose this topic, in order to study the theoretical problems. This paper is divided into four main parts:The first part: The condition of forming and developing of Book Carvings. It was inspired by the art of Book Carving in Japan and South Korea and affected by western modern art concepts. Its aesthetic orientation of the creation has two tendencies, the one is “zhong ji”, the other one is “zhong yi”.The second part: the source of it from traditional culture art. Oracle bone inscriptions, stone, plaque and other traditional calligraphy and the theory of calligraphy and seal carving are the source of Book carvings.The third part: the art language of Book carvings. The Dao Fa, Zi Fa, Zhang Fa, color and texture are the art language of it, which is the symbol of it can really become an independent art category.The last part: The paper through the analysis of regular carving exhibition works, reveals the developing tendency of Book carving art, that is "Nan Xiu Bei Po".
