The translation report is an excerpt of the Philosophical Conversations:A Concise Historical Introduction, written by Norman Melchert, a philosopher and an author. This book looks at philosophy as a conversation through the ages, it moves through history, presenting each philosopher’s work in part. The translator chooses chapter 6 Aristotle as translation task. It mainly discusses the thoughts of Aristotle, comparisons of philosophers, particularly between Plato and Aristotle, offers some explanations and extracts certain source paragraphs of Aristotle’s work when needed. From this book, readers will have a good knowledge of philosophy, develop creative thinking and settle life problem easily. This is an English-Chinese translation practice report. The translator has done a lot of work in order to complete this translation project. 1. Pre-translation preparation. The translator searches enough important information of the book, the author and the relevant knowledge. 2. In the process of translation practice. In this part, the translator pays much emphasis on the understanding of the original book and the expression of the translation. After that, the translator finds some related books about philosophy and makes an analysis of the text, proper nouns, etc. As a professional book on philosophy, the language of the original text is rather abstruse which brings many difficulties to the translator in expression and concise semantic selection. Therefore, the translator adopts translation strategies, resorts to parallel text, refers to dictionary and searches on the internet so as to make the translation accurate and present the meaning in a natural way.3. It’s proofreading. When the translator completes the first draft of translation, she goes through the whole text alongside with the original text. Then she reads it again and asks her partners to have a check. The translator gains several profound comprehensions through this translation practice, for example, translation theory and translation strategies are essential to guide the practice and having broad knowledge is beneficial.
