James Mellon Menzies’Oracle Bones that displayed in the Museum of Shandong have long history and enormous numbers. The preservation condition of these oracle bones are not quite satisfactory, but the characters and alphabets are clear, hence they are still valuable resources for collection as well as scientific studies. Some of the James Mellon Menzies’ Oracle Bones has experienced poor preservation condition and suffered numerous damages and diseases due to constraints and bad influences such as storage environment, wars, chaos and other historical reasons. So it is significantly important for us to protect and analyze James Mellon Menzies’Oracle Bones that displayed in the Museum of Shandong.Currently, James Mellon Menzies’ Oracle Bones has a relatively stable external environment. However, the damage and disease issues are still very serious that it may have devastating effects on these oracle bones’value and safety. Due to the fact that sufficient preparation and scientific methodology are the very premises of successful relic protection work, so before the start of the repair work on James Mellon Menzies’Oracle Bones, disease research and scientific analysis which consist of plenty, systematic as well as precise disease research is very necessary.This article has came up with a detailed field survey and current condition assessment. Which separately and precisely discussed the craft of oracle bones, types of diseases, causes of diseases, methods of protection and exhibition. This article provide a full picture of the current condition of James Mellon Menzies’ Oracle Bones and advices on repair works.There are as many as 15 kinds of damages and diseases afflicted on James Mellon Menzies’Oracle Bones.
