Jia Pingwa has created a great number of literary works since he entered into the literary world, among which the thirteen novels especially establish his position in the contemporary literary world. The writing content of his novel is mostly about rural subjects, and he has boldly explored the narrative art in these novels. With the transformation and maturity of his ideas about novels, Jia Pingwa brings the narrative art incisively and vividly which he realizes into his rural subject novels created in the new century-"Qinqiang" "Gulu" "Daideng". Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the narrative art’s features and evolvement in the three novels. The paper mainly analyzes and discusses the narrative art in the three novels in the following three parts. The first chapter mainly analyzes the choice of narrative perspective and narrative character in Jia Pingwa’s rural subject novels. Jia Pingwa uses one or more unique narrative perspective in the three novels-"Qinqiang" "Gulu" "Daideng". And in order to make up for the limitations of a single narrative perspective, he also uses a variety of narrative techniques. In addition, Jia Pingwa gives leading characters who bear narrative perspective distinctive loneliness for the purpose of different narrative viewpoints and objective narrative characters, leading to the characteristic that both narrative perspective and narrative character function properly. The second chapter mainly discusses the evolvement of daily life narrative pattern in Jia Pingwa’s rural subject novels. Combining with his novel concept and referencing the daily life narrative pattern in Chinese classical literary works, Jia Pingwa creates the unique daily life narrative pattern. The pattern is showed mainly in the reduction of original daily life, the story and anti story in novels, and the change of narrative rhythm and so on. And the pattern constantly evolves in the three novels which brings it from maturity to transcendence. The third chapter mainly explores the construction of the image narrative. As a literature factor, image has been valued by Jia Pingwa, so combining with the daily life narrative pattern, he constructs the structure of the image narrative-"the integral image+specific images" in the three novels. In the structure of the image narrative, Jia Pingwa arranges the whole novel by the integral image, and he makes specific images integrate in the integral image. The structure of the image narrative not only clarifies the narrative structure of a mass of confused novel content, but also is the inheritance and development of art spirit of Chinese classical literature.Through the analysis and exploration mentioned above, the paper aims at revealing the narrative art’s features and evolvement in Jia Pingwa’s rural subject novels in the new century to deepen the understanding and discussion of narrative art in Jia Pingwa’s novels.
