As one representative of avant-garde fictions, Ye Zhaoyan’s early literary works have obvious avant-garde features by doing a wide range of exploration and attempt on the narrative techniques and also the text experiment. His fame, though is not as famous as contemporaries such as Yu Hua, Su Tong, Ge Fei et al, but the fictions he and the avant-garde pioneers such as Su Tong, Yu Hua and Ge Fei jointly wrote, promoting the Chinese vanguard narrative fiction exploration to mature. At the same time, worrying about that the increasingly more progressive narrative trials on avant-garde creations would lose the readers, Ye’s still avant-garde fictions have become a gentle exploration. Afterwards, because of the weak development of avant-garde novels in the late eighties and early nineties and also his own fiction creative limitations, he began to write realistic fiction. This thesis mainly analyzes Ye Zhaoyan’s distinguishing creation by integrating the avant-garde and the realism and consists of introduction, body and conclusion. In the introduction, the thesis mainly studies the author-Ye Zhaoyan and the previous researches about his works, then illustrates the reasons for choosing this topic and the significance and value of this research. The first part mainly explains the avant-garde of Ye’s novels. Along with his obsession to narrative techniques, the avant-garde novel techniques such as meta-narrative, collage, black humor, broken structures and so on were frequently used in his works, which makes his fictions have a new guise with strong sense of form. The second part analyzes the gentle exploration and causes of Ye Zhaoyan’s avant-garde fictions. Unlike other avant-garde writers’diluting the stories, Ye preferred stories with plain language and without any extreme language trial, which makes his novels too gentle to completely overhaul. The two reasons are as follows: firstly, he pursued skills in his novels, but inconsistently, he depressed virtuosity and strongly denied skills; secondly, the possibility of losing readers made him compromise. The third part analyzes Ye’s transition to the realistic literature in the late nineties. It mainly includes four aspects. Firstly, the thesis analyzes the causes of the transition. Then it discusses the following textual topics and also the molding of the image of characters. The conclusion briefly reviews the body of this thesis and provides a thorough judgment about Ye Zhaoyan and his distinguishing creations.
