“Jin Ping Mei” as the first vernacular and long literature novel in our country, is a landmark in the history of literature. Specific timenodes-festivals are used in the novel. This paper takes the festivals description in “Jin Ping Mei” as the research object, through the in-depth analysis of the narrative functions of festvals in the novel and their value of folklore in literature, in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of the novel.In the introduction, the title of this paper clear the version of the object in this paper. Meanwhile, the significance of the topic and research methods, present status were explained.The first chapter detailed the list of the festivals involved in the novel of “Jing Ping Mei”. And then from the three aspects of quantity, region and structural arrangement the characteritics of the descriptions of festivals were analyzed.The second chapter focuses on discussing the narrative fuctions of festivals description in “Jin Ping Mei”. Mainly from three aspects: first is festival constructive functions throughout the plot development; second is the figure shaping fuction in the same festival and in different festivals; third is the fuction of deepening the theme.The third chapter mainly through the description of festivals of “Jin Ping Mei ” discussed the precious folklore value in folk custom evolution, presenting folk-custom activity characteritics, and reflecting the folk cultural psychology.Conclusion is a summary of the theme of the paper and highlighted the important important influence of festival description in “Jin Ping Mei” on the later novels about life.
