Marilyn French, a famous scholar writer and feminist in America. Her works have revealed women’s living dilemma. The Women’s Room is her first novel, which is concerned greatly for its distinctive feminist consciousness and autobiographic flavor. Using female space in The Women’s Room as an entry point, it reveals female space awareness and ceaseless effort in female space by analyzing cramped situation between family space and social space, pursuantly shows the writer’s cerebration to female deserved authentic existence of life and appeal to the most fundamental human rights of women.It is composed of five parts:Exodium introduces a brief account of Marilyn French’s life and research status of The Women’s Room at home and abroad and points out the value and significance of the research.The first chapter shows cramped survival space of female. Because the role orientation of patriarchal society for female, they are confined to family space. However, female doesn’t have dominant rights of space in the family space either. They have temporary personal space only in the living-room during the midnight and the locked bathroom. The fact that female doesn’t have any right gives rise to no room in the social space for them. Female is always frozen out whether in the work place or in the place of entertainment, even suffer from being confined to madhouse.The second chapter lays emphasis on female space awareness and pursuing female space. Cramped survival space makes spiritual world of female abused and they feel repressed, lost and despairing. Dissatisfied at the existing narrow space, female begins to pursue personal space by transforming family space, getting away from family space and seek special female space.The third chapter illustrates the thematic meaning of this work from space dimension. The existence state of female zero space and the failure of seeking personal space deepen tragic of the work. The female space awareness of the work actually reflects the writer’s cerebration to female existential problems, which is the most fundamental appeal to the human rights of women.The conclusion points out that female space problem in The Women’s Room belongs to female existential problems, which is common issues of mankind, and need further discussion.
