William Wordsworth was the founder of the English romantic poetry and the creator of romantic style in the 19 th century. Xu Zhimo was one of most important poets of new poetry in the early 20 th century in China. They had similar characteristics in their poetic style. Xu Zhimo was deeply influenced by Wordsworth in the aspect of romantic style. But they had differences in their respective style because of their different cultural and epochal background. There were similarities and differences between their concept of Imagination.This paper attempts to deeply understand Wordsworth and Xu Zhimo’s literary thoughts and writing style by analyzing and understanding their concept of Imagination starting from their poetic theory. The full text is divided into three parts.The first part is the introduction. It expounds the present situation of the current academic research into Wordsworth and Xu Zhimo and illustrates the research methods and significance of this paper. The second part is the body covering three chapters. The first chapter of the body introduces the two persons’ concept of Imagination and explores the formation and development of their concept of Imagination based on their poetic theory. The second chapter of the body analyzes the similarities of their concept of Imagination. It intends to interpret Xu Zhimo’s acceptance of Wordsworth after analyzing and comparing their concept of Imagination. The third chapter of the body indicates that there are both acceptance and sublation on Xu Zhimo’s attitude to Wordsworth’s concept of Imagination. The conclusion, the last part of the paper, summarizes the similarities and differences of Wordsworth and Xu Zhimo’s concept of Imagination and reveals the practical significance of this paper.
