The Differences Of Humor Processing Between Introvert And Extrovert: An ERP Study

Humor refers to the phenomenon that can make people laugh. To understand the humor processing will help improve the social function of humor and have a significant effect on promoting the humor processing theory. From the existing researches, on the one hand, scholars have explored the humor processing mechanism from the level of the behavior or brain imaging(f MRI), which can not provide precise humor processing. On the other hand, few researches have studied the differences of humor processing between introvert and extrovert. Furthermore, there are still some debates on experimental materials.In order to remedy those weaknesses, this research used Event Related Potential(ERP).The experiment one, two and three respectively chose the static form of humor(jokes and cartoons) and dynamic form of humor(comedy videos) as the experimental materials to explore humor processing and the differences of humor processing between introvert and extrovert.In this research, the main conclusions are as follows:(1)The humor processing includes two stages of cognitive processing(incongruity detection stage,incongruity resolution stage) and emotional processing stage.(2)In the humor processing with jokes and cartoon images as experiment material,there is a perceptual coding stage before the incongruity detection stage.(3)In the humor processing with cartoon images and comedy videoes as experiment material, there is a association evaluation stage before the incongruity resolution stage.(4)Both introvert and extrovert have significant difference in the N100 and N400,which suggests that the main difference between introvert and extrovert exists in the early stage of humor processing(perceptual coding stage,incongruity detection stage)and late stage of humor processing(emotional processing stage).(5) In the emotional processing stage, the humor processing shows the tendency of right side.
