Characterization Analysis In Fan Xiaoqing’s Novels

In the field of contemporary literary, Fan Xiaoqing is an excellent writer. She always shows her concern over social life through her own life experience, integrating the feelings into her novel writing. Each creation stage of her shows different characteristics, which is also influenced by the social environment she lives in. Hence the characters she creates have different times’ spirits. In a constant change of era, Fan adheres to her serious attitude towards literary creation. This paper analyzes the characterization in Fan’s each creation stage through intensive reading of the text, compares the difference of characters in early and late periods as well as the pattern to shape the figure and explores the reasons and value for the author to create them. This paper is divided into three sections.Section 1: Analysis of Fan’s characters in early and late periods. It is summarized that she shapes obscure characters within the regional culture in the early time while realistic character in historical background in the late. Through intensive reading of the text, this paper selects some typical figures of each character to analyze.Section 2: Analysis of Fan’s pattern to shape character. It analyzes from three angles: characterization from author’s different perspectives, narrative styles presented by different themes and language styles used in different characterizations.Section 3: Analysis of the reasons and value of Fan’s characterization. There are two main reasons: the first is her own experience, the other is the influence from social and cultural environment at that time. The value includes: creating a new phrase for “Su-style” novel, completing the reconstruction of realism and reconnecting with local literature.Fan shows us a colorful image-world by her novels. This paper, savoring the character, analyzes Fan’s novels written in three decades, elucidates the internal reason of characterization from the view of author’s spiritual disposition and discusses the aesthetic value of the character. We hope it will be helpful for the further study on Fan’s novels.
