The public basic course of English in vocational and technical colleges faces many problems, such as the students’ mediocre predisposition, lack of interest in English learning. At the same time, the rapid development of big data, cloud computing, Internet of things and mobile network produces the ubiquitous learning and mobile learning mode. The objective conditions are pressing for the teachers of English at vocational and technical colleges to reform the teaching methods and innovate the teaching modes. It was in this context that this study tried a reform in teaching English for the group of college students, making full use of the advantages of multimodal and mobile teaching with the aid of mobile devices indispensible to them--- applying the emerging mobile terminal as an effective means to the auxiliary teaching of vocational English vocabulary and forming a new type of mobile learning mode.In this study, a research on the mobile application in assisting English vocabulary teaching was conducted from the perspective of Constructivism theory and by integration of literature analysis, questionnaire, interview and experimentation. First of all investigated and analyzed were the present situation of the teaching and learning of public basic course of English in vocational colleges and the students’ requirements of the mobile application in English vocabulary learning. Then, according to the previous demand analysis and feasibility argumentation, developed was the mobile English vocabulary learning platform ―I Acquire WORD‖ composed of mobile clients and the server and also introduced and demonstrated were the design ideas and examples of layered design patterns of MVC on the Android platform for the application of the learning system. This study then put forward the mobile learning mode for auxiliary teaching of English vocabulary in vocational colleges, expounded its teaching target, teaching design, teaching evaluation and other related requirements and finally, with the new type of mobile learning mode constructing as the research target and auxiliary vocabulary teaching of grouped students as the research objects, made a comparative research through the platform for the efficiency of the applied mobile learning mode.The experimental results showed that, with the mobile application in assisting English vocabulary teaching, in the experimental group there was an obvious progress in the students’ English learning efficiency, and the students in the experimental group performed better than those in the control group in terms of English achievements. The students in the experimental group made gratifying improvement in English vocabulary learning efficiency, oral English, writing ability, autonomous learning ability, mobile learning ability, interest in learning English, teamwork, etc. Thanks to the reform of student evaluation system and standard, we can attribute all this to the establishment of the mobile learning mode. Our practice has proved that mobile applications into the auxiliary teaching of vocational English vocabulary accord with the requirement of current information-based teaching and meet the needs of the new college students’ learning style.
