A Research On C-E Translation Of Public Signs From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

With the rapid development of economy and the deepening of reform and opening-up policy, China has maintained close ties with other countries around the world. Especially in recent years, all kinds of international activities are held in China with an increasingly number of foreigners taking part in them. Under such circumstances, it goes without saying that Public Signs play a very important role in our daily life. Meanwhile, we can find that more and more bilingual Public Signs appear in many fields, which have made great contribution for foreigners to get a better understanding of China. Therefore, the attention has been paid to Chinese-English translation of Public Signs.Peter Newmark, a British translation theorist puts forward two kinds of theories, namely Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation according to different types of texts. The former, which is the translation at the author’s level, is applicable to expressive text to translate as close as to the source text, while the latter, emphasizing on the effect it exerts on the readers, can be utilized to translate Informative and Vocative Texts at the readership’s level.The writer presents the current situation of Public Signs translation, the background and significance of Chinese-English Public Signs and explains the text type of Public Signs and its classifications. Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory from Newmark, the translation principle and methods of C-E Public Signs will be concluded from the perspective of culture and language.This article uses comparative analysis methods, combines translation theory and practice through giving examples for better service of C-E Public Sign translation.
