In the second half of June 1919,Zhao Jun,the local Cantonese army was defeated by troops from Yunnan and Guangxi.Zhai wang,who is the commander of Zhao Jun and governor of Guangdong,fled from his position,as result,different military or political groups in Guangdong tried to seize the position of governor of Guangdong Province,Because the Guangxi Warlord were the most powerful one,they have the upper hand in this competition.For this reason,Zou lu and Xie yingbo,who belong to Revolutionary Party,made many Cantonese communities as backing,and led them to petition the Military Government to appoint Wu tingfang as governor.By the wide support of Cantonese people,Wu tingfang tried to get this position.But the Military Government,which feared the Guangxi warlord and had no real power,were not able to appoint Wu.In the first half of July,1919,the upsurge of May Forth Movement had just gone,but student movement was still going on in Guangzhou.The revolutionaries combined the petition for appointing Wu as governor with students’ anti-Japanese movement.Students and some citizens protested inside and outside Guangzhou city.They also coerce merchants to close up their shops to make a “merchant’s strike”,which is not quite successful,The Cantonese mechanics who were always close to revolutionaries supported the students and citizens.They went on strike and participated in the protest.This was the so called “three strike ”movement of Guangzhou,When the authorities suppressed them with armed forces,this movement failed very quickly.Zhang jinfang,who was a government official close to Guangxi warlord,became the“caretake”governor of Guangdong.Most of research findings of past recorded these events in the view of May Forth Movement,and looked them as people’s unprompted patriotic and anti-warlord movement.My study will start from reviewing those existing researches,then collected and sorted out many newspapers,archives,letters,telegram,memoirs,collected works made in the period of the Republic of China,by the approach of coordinating the history and logic,to investigate the origin,process and result of unrest caused by the changing of governor of Guangdong and the Guangzhou “Three Strikes” movement in1919.Discovering the undercurrent of them,and answering why the strike failed finally,...
