About Hua Mulan’s Image In Opera "Mulan Psalm" Analysis

Opera "Mulan poem",based on the folk-tale of advancement of Hua Mulan, puts emphases on the theme of "peace and development" along with the traditional virtues of the filial piety to express the wishes of people all over the world, which is popular all over the world. This paper focuses on the image of Hua Mulan from the perspectives of the characteristics of the figure, the music style and the performance on the stage by different artists.The first chapter mainly analyzes the images of female and maleHua Mulan, especially exploring the detailed description in the opera and the gender transformation of Hua Mulan which.The second chapter focused on the music of’Mulan Poem". The music integrates Chinese music features with the western opera technique, in which some materials of Henan Yu Opera (a local opera popular in Henan province in China)can be found, thus forming an"aria" with Chinese characteristics.This chapter provides a detailed analysis on the forms of five aria, classifying music theme and dominant motivations and summarizing the characteristics of image in the music of mulan.The third chapter comparesthe voices and performances of Peng Liyuan and Lei Jia to summarize how to presentMulan on the stage.The last chapter points out the shortcomings of the opera "mulan poem" and shows that Chinese national opera should be rooted in traditional music, based oncommon people’s daily life and emotions,and combine with western opera techniques.
