In 1920s, with a large number of historical and cultural proses characterized by rich connotation, profound cultural background and unique aesthetic style, Wang Chonglv has taken a place among the great contemporary essayists. Making Wang Chonglv’s historical and cultural prose as the study object and based on intensive reading of the texts, this thesis aims to systematically and elaborately discuss his historical and cultural prose through close reading and analysis of the texts, combining with theories like aesthetics, philosophy, linguistics and psychology.The thesis consists of three parts including introduction, the body and conclusion. The introduction part expounds the significance and current state of the research, introduces the research methods and ideas, and clarifies and defines the concept of "historical and cultural prose".Chapter one to chapter four are the body part. Chapter one explores the reasons Wang Chonglv writes historical and cultural prose and make an overview of his writing. The reasons are analyzed through combining with the context of prose writing in 1920s and relating to the writer’s particular experience as being badly ill and his historical knowledge and feelings. It divides Wang Chonglv’s historical and cultural prose writing into three stages and makes overall evaluation and conclusion of the relative writing in each stage.Chapter two and chapter three are the main body part. Chapter two analyzes the spiritual peculiarity including the deep life consciousness, strong tragedy consciousness, intense criticizing consciousness and profound modern consciousness, trying to dig out the humanistic spirit and realistic significance in Wang Chonglv’s works to provide references of values and spiritual nourishment for modern society.Chapter three examines the aesthetic characteristics of Wang Chonglv’s historical and cultural prose. This chapter mainly clarifies the artistic innovation and breakthrough in his historical and cultural proses from three aspects including language characteristics, emotion expression and consciousness on the type of writing, and analyzes the reasons for the forming of these characteristics through combining with Wang Chonglv’s cultural accomplishment, life experience and special identity, trying to comprehensively and systematically grasp the aesthetic peculiarity of Wang Chonglv’s works.Chapter four discusses the achievements and shortages of Wang Chonglv’s historical and cultural prose writing from positive and negative aspects, expecting to make object judgements on his historical and cultural prose writing.The concluding part affirms Wang Chonglv’s real writing achievements, concludes his writing process of historical and cultural prose writing and looks forward to his future writing.
