Ge Fei is a unique member of avant-garde writers in 1980 s who created a lar ge number of experimental novels, such as The Lost Boat, Brown Birds and Qingh uang, which provide us a new channel to the mysterious world of vanguard novels.The publication of The Flag of Desire in 1994 marked the fact that Ge Fei began to explore new creative transformation, and the "Jiangnan Trilogy" after ten years o f silence once again led the readers to the criticism of the pioneer novel, on Chine se writing new possibilities for critical attention. This article attempts to explore wh y and how avant-garde writers changed their literary styles since 1990 s by discussin g Ge Fei’s creative transformation comprehensively.Ge Fei’s writing carreer can be divided into two stages: the earlier one is date d from his maiden work Emembrance of Mr. Wu Yau to The Flag of Desire, and th e later one in which the "Jiangnan Trilogy" can be referred to as representative wo rks is famous of its strong classical flavor. During the whole decade of silence, Ge Fei didn’t write any novels, and he concentrated on studying the theory of novel s.My dissertation is divided into three chapters. Chapter One mainly expounds G e Fei’s literary creation stages and two transformations(including the creation in The Flag of Desire and the "Jiangnan Trilogy" and the transitional stage of novel theo ry study). Chapter Two focuses on what made Ge Fei decide to change the way he used to, in the one hand, social and historical factors are responsible for the trans formation, and on the other hand, the changing thoughts and motivation is the inne r impetus of Ge Fei’s literary creation. Chapter Three inquires how Ge Fei merges Chinese and western factors from the aspects of language skills, thematic hierarchy and narrative structure. Ge Fei didn’t abandon his previous style, not only did he learn from the west, but also inherit the Chinese tradition. In this sense, Ge Fei’s t ransformation is worth of reference to other Chinese novelists.
